Kamalraj's Story

Coming from a small rural town in South India, Kamalraj’s dream has always been to graduate from a prestigious college. However, since his father (construction worker) and mother (short-term low-pay contractor) would only earn a total of 1000-6000 rupees ($12-73 USD) a month, Kamalraj attended government school until 12th grade. But when the time came to pick which college he would attend, Kamalraj was faced with a tough decision: Bishop Heber College (a well-known private institution) and the local government college in Kalathur.

In awe of the various educational opportunities at Bishop Heber, Kamalraj asked his father, the main breadwinner of his family, whether he could support him. Unfortunately, his father—an alcoholic—confronted Kamalraj and vowed not to fund any piece of his tuition if Kamalraj chose the more expensive Bishop Heber. Kamalraj turned to his mother, who in an effort to empower her son, approached various local organizations to see if she could find any additional support. Once she found Payir, his mother agreed to put together any money she had saved up, coupled with the support from Payir, so that her son could follow his dream.

Now, Kamalraj is thriving at Bishop Heber, but he needs your financial support to propel him towards his dream of graduation.
